ELA
GQ: How can ELA students use their presentation skills to convey stem findings with community partners? ELA students will be demonstrating proficiency in the following standards: ELAGSE7SL4: Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with pertinent descriptions, facts, details, and examples; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation. |
9/15/23 7th grade students began to develop an “Elevator Pitch” (as a group/individual) on how to supplement Bartow County’s non-profit food share organizations with more nutritious options.
9/20/23 A rubric was provided in ELA that the students utilized in all content areas as they created their pitch. 9/22 through 9/28 Students will present their pitches in ELA class throughout the week. Students will continue to perfect their pitch in anticipation of presenting to the local community partners. Students worked in groups and/or solo, and they had many opportunities to receive peer feedback in each content class. |
Science
. GQ: How does poor nutrition affect cell growth and overall health of the human body? S7L2a. Obtain, Evaluate, and communicate information to describe how cell structures, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems interact to maintain the basic needs of organisms. S7L2b. Construct an argument that systems of the body interact to support life processes. |
8/9/2023 Students began obtaining information about plant and animal cells structure and function. Students were distinguished when they could correctly explain all five cell organelle functions along with explaining how they all work together to carry out life processes of the cell.
Students used cell analogies to help communicate the information during a presentation. (Tinker-cad or Minecraft) 9/11/2023 Students investigated diffusion and osmosis, and how nutrients are brought into and out of the cells of the human body. 9/12/2023 Students begin to evaluate the systems of the human body and how those systems work together to obtain nutrients for the cells of the body. 9/22/2023 Students researched local food pantry websites for a list of common items found in the pantries. Students complete a CER with the writing prompt: Choose one item from the list that would be considered processed food. Explain why this item is considered a processed food. What effect does tis processed food item have on the body? Use text evidence from at least two sources you have read to defend your answer. 9/25/2023 Students work in small groups to brainstorm ideas. How might we provide more nutritious options to local food pantries? Student’s will use these ideas to create an "Elevator Pitch" in science and practicing delivering the "Pitch" in ELA class. Students that have completed the EDP will deliver their pitch in small groups Friday 9/29/2023. 9/27/2023 Some groups researched the idea of building their own gardens have come to the conclusion the expense is too great, they are now improving the design. Some groups have returned to the imagine portion of the EDP. STEM extension: Students read the scientific journal “Can We Grow Safe and Nutritious Food in Space?” Scientific Journals for kids then in small groups debate the concept. |
Math
GQ: How does math help support your idea of how you can help supplement nutritious food to the local food pantry? 7.NR.1 Solve relevant mathematical problems, including multistep problems, involving the four operations with rational numbers and quantities in any form (integers, percentages, fractions, and decimal numbers). |
9/15/23
Math students were given two articles to read and a website to view with information on Teen Nutrition. Students researched nutritious foods and looked at how the nutrients protein, carbohydrates, and fats in food serve as the body’s energy sources. 9/18/23 – 9/22/23 Students looked at food labels on various food products. Students assigned certain point values to foods with certain percentages or grams to compare which foods were more nutritious. 9/25/23 Students discussed their solution to how they can help supplement nutritious food to the local food pantry with partners. They shared their ideas with each other and logged it in their Stem Journal |
