STEM Vision and Culture
The Cass Middle School STEM Vision and Culture has been established in the school which begun with an excited administration team and a determined 6th Grade team of qualified teachers. Dr. Arnold was thrilled to learn about the positive affect STEM had on students success in the classroom and the increased engagement it would bring to our students, leading her to introduce STEM learning to Cass Middle School. With the help of Administration, Kim Holland the ILT, and a 6th grade teacher Torre Ray STEM began at Cass Middle School during the 2019-2020 school year with 2 successful STEM walks for 6th grade students.
During the 2020-2021 school year, a STEM subcommittee was formed under the direction of STEM coordinators Kim Holland and Torre Ray. During this school year, the 7th and 8th grade teachers joined into the STEM culture to bring STEM to all of Cass Middle School. This allowed ALL students to experience STEM through the whole-school model. It is important to engage students in high-interest, rigorous, hands-on curriculum that is integrated into all of the STEM experiences at CMS. This led to Cass Middle School receiving County STEM certification in December 2020.
The CMS STEM mission and vision specifically focuses on how we can help our students grow for graduation and beyond by introducing them to possible careers in STEM fields and become productive members of the community. By integrating STEM into the classroom, and enhancing our learning communities throughout the school through planning STEM lessons, we are able to live out our mission and vision not only for STEM but for our school. Our Mission, Vision, and Collective Commitments for our school and our STEM program appear below.
Additionally, we have developed a STEM framework that provides guidance for new staff members and stakeholders seeking information about the vision, culture, and curriculum approach to STEM at CMS. This framework includes the following: Why CMS Participates in STEM; What STEM Looks Like at CMS; The Importance of Community Partners; How CMS Incorporates STEM Into The School Culture; Thematical Unit Example; and the CMS Engineering Design Process.
